LIQUIDICE Seeks Postdoctoral Researcher on green transition, melting glaciers and climate adaptation in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)

The LIQUIDICE project is delighted to announce a new opportunity for an ambitious postdoctoral researcher to join our international consortium in exploring climate change adaptation in Greenland. The position is now open at the University of Copenhagen, to be filled by 1 February 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

About the Role & Project

This 22-month postdoctoral role is embedded within Work Package 4: Impact of Change in Water Resources from the Cryosphere to Society, under the umbrella of the Horizon Europe project LIQUIDICE. Operational from February 2025 through January 2029, LIQUIDICE brings together partner institutions across Europe and beyond to study changing ice, snow, and permafrost, and their social and hydrological impacts.

The successful candidate will be part of the Greenlandic and Arctic Studies (GAS) group within the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies (ToRS), Faculty of Humanities, UCPH. This interdisciplinary environment spans Arctic anthropology, Inuit studies, cultural studies, and environmental sciences.

Key Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will:

  • Lead and execute an interdisciplinary research project on topics such as citizen engagement, climate adaptation, renewable energy (e.g. hydropower), democratic participation, and hydropolitics in Arctic contexts.
  • Contribute to Task 4.2 of LIQUIDICE, focusing on public resistance, community participation, and adaptation strategies in Greenland.
  • Interface with natural scientists working on dynamic modelling and hydrological data from WP1–WP3 to integrate socio-environmental insights.
  • Engage in dialogues with local stakeholders, rightsholders, and policymakers in Greenland; analyze climate adaptation and energy policy practices; and help shape policy recommendations.
  • Actively take part in weekly department meetings, reading groups, project seminars, workshops, and cross-partner online activities.

Given the Greenlandic and Danish/Scandinavian dimensions of the work, proficiency in Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) and/or a Scandinavian language is a strong plus. Experience or interest in Arctic politics is advantageous.

Why This Role Matters for LIQUIDICE & the Wider Arctic

LIQUIDICE aims to deepen understanding of how melting glaciers, changing snow cover, and thawing permafrost affect water systems and societies in vulnerable regions. Integrating social science and humanities perspectives is essential to ensure that adaptation and mitigation strategies are grounded in community realities, stakeholder priorities, and democratic processes.

This postdoctoral position offers a unique chance to shape the dialogue between climate science, policy, and communities in Greenland. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence policy-relevant research, contribute to cross-disciplinary collaboration, and engage directly with Arctic societies as they navigate climate transitions.
