March 21st is World Glacier Day, March 22nd World Water Day, and March 23rd Meteorology Day. To celebrate, we invite you to two special lessons on 23 March connecting these three holidays.

Milestone 6: Agreement on the scenarios used in LIQUIDICE, considering CMIP and ISMIP developments and needs of the downscaling task. The document describes the rationale for the selected global climate scenarios and lists fields from global simulations that LIQUIDICE partners will use to downscale climate states to regional and local scales, allowing specialized simulations to determine various impacts in collaboration with WP4 on hydrological conditions, tourism development (Italy), electrification and climate adaptation (e.g., Greenland). Finally, it summarizes the existing coupled climate-ice-sheet efforts.

A groundbreaking study published this month in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) reveals that Svalbard experienced an unprecedented glacier melt during the summer of 2024—losing roughly 1% of its total ice mass, or 61.7 ± 11.1 gigatons, the highest recorded in modern observations. In LIQUIDICE, high-resolution climate data is critical for understanding how glaciers, snow, and water systems are changing across the Alps, Greenland, and Svalbard.
