It is the largest technical university in Spain focused on Engineering studies and research. It was established in 1971 as a union of many pre-existing Schools of various specialties, several dating back to the 18th century. It has about 3,000 faculty/researchers and 28,000 students.

The main role of UPM within LIQUIDICE is collecting field data on the internal structure of polythermal glaciers, using ground-penetrating radar techniques, and using these data to feed numerical models addressed to predicting the temporal evolution of such glaciers under a warming climate, including water runoff estimates.
