On 14–25 April, a research team from the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, consisting of Adam Nawrot and Bartek Luks, conducted spring fieldwork in Svalbard. The main objective of their work was to measure the mass balance of the Hans Glacier (Southern Spitsbergen) and to maintain the equipment used to monitor the cryosphere. During the fieldwork, the scientists checked the condition of ablation poles, downloaded data from automatic SPICE stations, which are used to measure the accumulation and ablation of snow cover in the Fuglebekken catchment, and checked the operation of time-lapse cameras monitoring the spatial distribution of snow in this area. Additionally, data was read from thermometers placed in the elevation profile on Mount Fugleberget.
The work was carried out in cooperation with employees of the University of Silesia in Katowice and Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The collected data will be used to to better understand the processes occurring in the Arctic ice environment, which is one of the aims of LIQUIDICE.
